Congress MP Manish Tewari on Tuesday questioned the abrupt resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, describing it as “wrapped in mystery and rolled in an enigma.” He urged Dhankhar to clarify the circumstances behind his decision, given the gravity of the office he held.
Speaking to ANI, Tewari said, “First of all, I wish the Vice President a healthy and long life. However, his resignation remains somewhat of a riddle — wrapped in mystery and rolled in an enigma.”
Calling the resignation “abrupt and unexplained,” Tewari added that it would be appropriate for Dhankhar to shed light on the reasons, especially since the Vice President holds the second-highest constitutional office in the country.
“While not intruding into his personal health matters, if it is indeed a health issue, it would be helpful if he shared some context behind his decision,” Tewari said, pointing out the lack of any visible emergency or announcement that preceded the resignation.
Taking to social media earlier in the day, Tewari wrote on X, “The resignation of @VPIndia Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar is a riddle wrapped in mystery rolled in an enigma… It would really help if he clarifies the reasons for his sudden and abrupt decision.”
He further noted that the Vice President always has access to the best possible medical care, and whether to avail it while in office or not remains his prerogative.
Congress leaders, including Jairam Ramesh and Bhupesh Baghel, have also raised suspicions over Dhankhar’s resignation, hinting at political reasons beyond the stated health concerns. Ramesh had earlier pointed to the absence of key ministers from a crucial Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting chaired by Dhankhar just hours before his resignation.
Dhankhar resigned on Monday evening, stating in his letter to President Droupadi Murmu that he was stepping down “to prioritise health care and abide by medical advice.” His sudden exit during an active Parliament session has sparked speculation across the political spectrum.
